Student Mentors

ICOM is honored to have contact with second-year medical students from the Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest (COMP-Northwest). These second-year students have generously volunteered to act as mentors to our inaugural class. They have fittingly named themselves the "COMPanions," and have created this video to welcome and encourage you.

Please feel free to reach out to any of the mentors. They are here to answer questions and offer encouragement!

Mentors (companions)

My name is Meredith Bell, and I am a second year who is interested in pursuing some type of surgical specialty, most likely general surgery or orthopedics. I am a TA for a class called Essentials of Clinical Medicine, and I am also working on both a basic science and clinical research project at this time.

Hi! My name is Omar, and my wife and I attend COMP-Northwest (both second years). I have interests in Neurology and Prinary Care. I play French Horn and am a huge film nerd (superhero films included). I hope you all have a wonderful year and let me know how I can help!

I'm co-president of the COMP-Northwest's Internal Medicine Club/ACP Student Chapter, co-vice president for AMWA Club, and the alternate student representative to the Board of Trustees of the Oregon Medical Association. Over the summer, I worked on a rheumatology research project at the VA Portland Health Care System, and I am currently planning to pursue a residency in internal medicine, followed by a fellowship in rheumatology.

I am 24 years old, and things I like to do outside of school include spend time with family and go on adventures with friends. I am currently active in four different clubs (Christian Medical club, Bioethics club, Family Medicine club, and Rural Health club) and looking into going into either Family medicine or Palliative care.

My name is Bethany Koschel, and I was born and raised in Colorado. When I’m not studying, I spend my free time volunteering with our local health department and exploring the PNW with my husband. I’m interested in IM and possibly geriatrics!

I’m from a small town in Oregon, went to college in Washington and ran college track. I was a scribe for 3 years and since arriving to medical school I have been involved in TAing (anatomy and clinical medicine), US Club, ER club, SGA, SAAO, Sports Medicine Club, Rural Health Club, and Applied Anatomy track. Main specialty interest (really only interest) is emergency medicine.

Hi I'm Troyce, and I am the Co-President of AMWA, Treasurer for Specialties Club and one of the two Student Coordinators for the East Linn Free Clinic.

Lucas Sontra,

Hey y’all, I’m Lucas Sontra and I’m a second year at COMP-NW. As a former college athlete, I’m interested in sports medicine, orthopedics and physical medicine and rehabilitation. I’m an officer for SOMA(student osteopathic medical association) and the vice-president of the orthopedics club. When not hitting the books I enjoy anything that will get me outdoors, especially fly fishing.

My name is Jake Nelson, I am a second year at COMP-NW. I am part of the Bio medical & Clinical research track and interested in pursuing dermatology. Married, no kids yet!

Future Mentors

ICOM will be starting it's own mentoring program for the 2019-2020 academic year. We'll be looking for second-year students to help the incoming class!
