The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine in Meridian will be the state’s first medical school.

In early December, school officials announced it advanced in the pre-accreditation process and can begin taking applications from prospective students. Classes are expected to begin in fall 2018 with up to 150 students, according to the college.

The building is under construction at 1311 E. Central Drive, which is near Locust Grove Road and Interstate 84 and on Idaho State University’s Meridian campus, though the private medical college is not affiliated with ISU.

Part of the college’s mission includes recruiting students who are committed to working in the medical field throughout Idaho, regionally and beyond, according to its strategic plan.

Construction on the $34 million, 90,000-square-foot building began in May.
