David McClusky III, MD
Dr. David McClusky III earned a BA in History from Whitman College, and received a Medical Degree from Northwestern University in 2000. He completed a general surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Mayo Clinic Florida. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. After completing his fellowship in 2008, he worked as a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Emory University, serving as the Associate Chief of Surgery and Chief of Surgery at the Atlanta Veterans Administration Hospital, and the Associate Program Director of the Emory University General Surgery Residency Program. At Emory, he worked closely with both the general surgery residents and medical students as a chair of the Department’s Education Committee, and as a member of both the M3 and M4 Clerkship committees. He has been a preceptor for the Idaho State University Physician Assistant program since 2014.
Dr. McClusky demonstrated an early interest during his research fellowship in the use of medical and surgical simulation, and has been participating in both research and administrative activities involving simulation throughout his career. He served as the Director of Surgical Skills Training and Simulation at Emory, and was the surgical representative to the Emory Center for Experiential Learning Advisory Group. He was also the VISN-7 SimLEARN Champion for the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs during that time. He is now working as the interim Medical Director of Simulation throughout the St. Luke's Health System.
Dr. McClusky's other professional interests include the areas of healthcare quality and safety, and healthcare administration. He is a Certified Professional of Healthcare Quality, and has been the Medical Director of Quality and Safety at St. Luke’s Wood River Hospital since returning to Idaho in 2013. He serves as the chair of St. Luke’s Health System’s East Region Board Quality Safety and Service Committee. He has served as the Chief of Surgery, and Division Medical Director of Specialty Services at St. Luke’s Wood River and is a member of multiple local, regional and system-based committees as a physician and board member within the St. Luke’s Health System.
Dr. McClusky III was born in Moscow, raised in Twin Falls, and lives with his wife and step-son in Hailey. He is a fourth-generation physician who has followed his family members by practicing in Southern Idaho, and still works with his father both in Wood River and in Twin Falls. He has been honored to serve the community as a board member for the Camp Rainbow Gold organization and as a recently appointed member of the Idaho Board of Medicine.
